HOBI 2004 Award Winner
Best Custom Home Under 3,000 sq. ft. The design of this small residence in Connecticut is unique in that it is a fusion of the Architects’ own style with Frank Lloyd Wright’s. The clients, the Architect and Mr. Wright were all from Oak Park, Illinois. The three met on this project.
Happily they selected a Builder who can think “out of the box”.
The site challenge was daunting in that visually the building was to “grow out of the ledge rock” which simultaneously had to dynamited to create the basement. The pinned foundation walls had to be stepped, battered and ledged to set a meticulous Japanese style stone veneer as it emerged from the undulating site plane at a myriad of elevations and wall thicknesses. These veneer walls in turn were required to meet up with hand crafted metal light cages without tolerance for error. The builder’s operation resembled a 12th century stone yard policed by a laser beamed transit.
The degree of difficulty continued inside where rough honed stone floors and rough hewn beamed ceilings are defined by high gloss painted precise paneled walls. In two multifaceted rooms the clear pine panel work was so impressively perfect, the paint job was canceled and the craftsmanship clear-coated.
Overall, the experience is one of consistency. The dozens of “first time” details, although executed by the different trades, seem to be executed by the same careful hand. Rare talent made this home.
